Welcome to today’s lecture on Hayahay practice. In our fast-paced world, finding moments of peace and relaxation can be a challenge. Hayahay meditation offers a refreshing approach to mindfulness, focusing on ease and tranquility. The term "hayahay" comes from the Philippines and translates to "ease" or "relaxed state." This practice encourages letting go of stress and embracing a calm mindset.

We'll explore what Hayahay practice is, its key features, who might practice it, and the reasons people are drawn to this gentle, accessible form of meditation. Whether you're familiar with meditation or just starting out, Hayahay provides an inviting way to cultivate peace and clarity in your life. Let's dive in.

Purpose

In today’s world, it is essential to reconnect with the deeper aspects of our existence. The purpose of this exploration is manifold:

- to understand the true importance of the soul as believed by our ancestors

- to recognize the significance of both our outer and inner selves

- to learn how to align our souls for improved health and wholeness, and to embrace meditation in a culturally relevant way.

Hayahay: The Essence of Comfort

The term "hayahay" translates to comfort, convenience, coziness, calm, and refreshed breathing. It captures the essence of finding peace and tranquility in our lives. Embracing serenity is vital for nurturing our soul and fostering a connection with our inner being.

Kaluluwa and Animismo: A Holistic Perspective

At the heart of animism lies the concept of "kaluluwa," derived from the Latin word "anima," meaning soul, breath, or life. This belief system teaches us the difference between the soul, spirit, and ghost:

- The Soul is our living essence, the core that gives us life.

- The Spirit is the divine self, made of energy and representing the essence of all existence.

- The Ghost refers to the apparition of the soul, a remnant that lingers after the body's departure.

Understanding these distinctions is crucial to appreciating our spiritual state and health.

The Soul and Health

The Babaylans (Filipino Shamans) and our ancestors, recognized the importance of the soul to our overall wellbeing. They understood that our soul acts as a civil battery, vital for our life's energy. There are seven major souls in our body—located in our head, eyes, nose, ears, mouth, arms, and legs. By acknowledging the functions of these souls and showing gratitude for their roles, we can enhance our health and life experience. It's beneficial to communicate with these soul aspects, expressing appreciation and seeking improvement where needed.

Usbog: Nurturing Our Natural Energy

The term "usbong" or "usbog" refers to the natural light and energy within us. Maintaining a balance between our body, mind, and soul is critical for overall well-being. This balance helps us thrive spiritually and physically.

Understanding Usog: The Imbalance of the Soul

"Usog" refers to the loss of balance or improper alignment of a person's soul that can lead to illness, particularly affecting children. It is often associated with the concept of the "evil eye," where someone can project negative energy that disrupts one's spiritual alignment. Recognizing the symptoms, such as abdominal pain and dizziness, is essential for addressing this imbalance. Preventative measures may include avoiding negative interactions and maintaining the alignment of our souls through practices like "hayahay."

Halang na Kaluluwa: The Importance of Empathy

The phrase "halang ang kaluluwa" translates to "heartless" or "soulless." It depicts a lack of empathy and moral character in individuals. Recognizing the importance of compassion enriches our spiritual journey and is a core tenet of our ancestral understanding of community and connection.

Practicing Hayahay

To engage in the practice of Hayahay, we can follow a simple yet profound ritual:

1. Light a candle for our spirit guides, creating a sacred space.

2. Use incense (preferably charcoal with honey) as an offer to our ancestors.

3. Chant the sacred syllables 3 (short version) or 7 (integral version) times while envisioning breath, soul embrace, and light.

4. Apply coconut oil on the seven major souls, expressing gratitude, acknowledging overuse, and setting intentions for improvements.

5. Spend time in silence, embracing self-reflection, and then chant the sacred syllables once more, feeling the clarity of voice and lightness.

Through this meditation and acknowledgment of our spiritual selves, we cultivate a connection with our ancestors and their wisdom, leading to greater harmony within ourselves.

Embracing these teachings not only honors our past but also illuminates our path forward, guiding us toward a balanced, healthful existence enriched by the wisdom of our ancestors.

As we wrap up our exploration of Hayahay meditation and ancestral wisdom, let’s take a moment to connect with our inner selves. By embracing ease and tranquility, we make way for healing and transformation.
